The commonest of the "basidiolichen" toadstools, it is mainly found on heathland or clearings in acid woodland where it grows on peaty soil or half-buried wood. The lichen component (formerly called Botrydina vulgaris) forms a carpet of tiny green granules. The whitish toadstool grows out of this. It has strongly decurrent gillls and often a purplish tinge at the top of the tomentose stipe.
