Review (by Malcolm Storey)

Dichotomous key for the identification of this small family of beetles found in burrows on shore-lines (salt and fresh).

Can be downloaded from the Royal Entomological Society’s website.

Examine with x8 or x10 hand lens ( Stereo Microscope is also useful)
Specimen PreparationSee p3. Kill with boiling water, then mount dry in such a way that both top and bottom can be examined. Head should be extended and mouthparts and antennae spread out. Genitalia preps needed.
Identification difficultyThe main key uses a balance of characters, but "only an examination of the aedeagophore will define any species beyond doubt".
