Introduces the terminology used in the other Diptera volumes of this series. The beginner will appreciate the labelled wing venation diagrams for various families on p 17, 19 and 22.

There follows a dichotomous key to Diptera families. Unfortunately this is now rather dated in that many families have since been split.
