Review (by Malcolm Storey)

"Important Fungus Areas" report published.

Gaps on maps - the unevenness of recording, especially for microfungi.

Protected sites: Royal Society report "The Future of Sites of Special Scientific Interest" recommends seeking input from the BMS and other learned societies to redress the balance in favour of neglected taxonomic groups.

Threatened sites: Roecliffe Manor Lawns has been notified as a SSSI soley on the basis of its waxcap mycota. The site of Milham Ford School in Oxfordshire has also been saved forwildlife. Another waxcap grassland (Mynydd Epynt, in Wales) also notified as an SSSI. News from the New Forest is less encouraging with a stipitate hydnum site partly destroyed, and the waxcaps at Downe House are still under threat.

RSPB now has a part time mycologist.
