Review (by Malcolm Storey)Analysis of proportions of stable isotopes of Nitrogen and Oxygen in Hygrocybe fruitbodies showed it was nutritionally distinct from both ectomycorrhizal and saprotrophic fungi. Hygrocybe showed enriched 15N and depleted 13C. The 15N readings approached those of top animal carnivores! One suggestion is that Hygrocybe are obtaining their nitrogen from deep soil horizons.
