Review (by Malcolm Storey)The sphacelia stage of Claviceps on grass flower heads produces nectar to attract flies (eg the common hoverfly, Melanostoma scalare) for fertilisation. Visiting hoverflies infected with Entomophthora pass this on to other hoverflies until there are many dead flies attached to the grass stems.
