Sequencing confirms current the Hydnellum species but suggests there may be undiscovered species in Phellodon.

At small sites, the colonies were clonal suggesting mycelial spread. Larger sites had mutiple clones and a mixture of species. Sites need to be maintained in their entirety to maintain genetic diversity.
