Review (by Malcolm Storey)The "green islands" produced by leaf-miners on senescent leaves result from the introduction of insect-symbiotic bacteria, probably Wolbachia, which alter the plant metabolism and reverse senescence. This enables the leaf-miner to fit in an extra generation in the autumn after the leaves have ceased to be sufficiently nutritious.
