Review (by Malcolm Storey)

Expands on the brief account in K&R and gives descriptions of the three species of the T. furfuracea complex: T. furfuracea s.s., T. hiemalis and the somewhat smaller-spored T. romagnesiana. It is here that he described T. romagnesiana as a new species. It is important to note that his concept of T. furfuracea = Naucoria segestria of K & R, his concept of T. hiemalis = T. furfuracea of K & R, and his concept of T. romagnesiana = N. pellucida of K & R and of Bon, and T. furfuracea of Moser. i.e. one must not assume that different authors have the same fungus in mind when using the same name.

Thanks to Alan Silverside for the above information. He adds that he was satisfied that all three taxa ss. Arnolds are around and can be separated, T. romagnesiana much the commonest and consistently distinguishable by its smaller spores, T. hiemalis frequent in the winter, true T. furfuracea ss. Arnolds more uncommon, but distinctive when seen, always heavily floccose.
