Review (by Malcolm Storey)

Colonization of Alnus glutinosa leaf litter by aquatic hyphomycetes in a summer cool stream of the French Pyrenees.

Initial colonization was by a dense sporulation of Tetrachaetum elegans, Lemonniera aquatica, L. centrosphaera, L. terrestris, and in particular Flagellospora curvula. After four weeks a mature community characterized by high species diversity and peak fungal biomass had formed; this coincided with c. 50% loss of leaf biomass. The late successional stage comprised Clavatospora longibrachiata, Heliscella stellata and Goniopila monticola.
