Review (by Malcolm Storey)

A modern illustrated guide to slugs and near-slugs, including recent additions to our fauna.

The keys take a bit of getting used to as they switch from landscape to portrait, and from single page to double-page spread.

Always check the species account after using the keys as it often contains information which qualifies the determination.

Examinein the hand in the Hand ( with x8 or x10 hand lens is also useful)
Specimen PreparationDissection sometimes required.
Identification difficultyA very difficult group: colour variability, species complexes in the large common Arions and the small common Deroceras, and the young of larger species are often difficult to distinguish from adults of smaller species. Not encouraging that the writers of the guide had to resort to DNA to confirm their identifications, but at least this means the guide is reliable.
