Review (by Malcolm Storey)

Covers the 5 species of Bolboschoenus occurring in Europe: B. glaucus, B. laticarpus, B. maritimus, B. planicumis and B. yagara. All are illustrated with line drawings and maps (except B. glaucus), and a key is given.

B. laticarpus has recently been identified in the UK.

B. laticarpus has a more open inflorescence, with most of the spikelets being stalked with stalks more than twice the length of a sessile spikelet. B. maritimus has most or all spikelets sessile, and those that are stalked have stalks less than twice the length of a sessile spikelet.

If in doubt the achene surface (20x lens) is diagnostic:

B. laticarpus achenes smooth.
B. maritimus achenes with polygonal network.
