Review (by Malcolm Storey)Neotyphodium fungal endophytes produce toxic alkaloids which protect their host grasses from herbivory. The present study showed the increased aphid abundance on non-host Trifolium repens, when adjacent to non-infected compared to adjacent to infected Lolium multiflorum. Endophytes also modified the volatiles of the Lolium, as detected by an electronic nose.
