Review (by Malcolm Storey)

The genetics of dioecy in Silene latifolia - like in vertebrates, the female is homogametic and male is heterogametic (so called XX and YY, respectively). This is merely the standard naming in such situations and doesn’t indicate commonality with our own X or Y chrosomes.

The various degrees of dioecy in other members of the Silene" are driven by the same genetics so it offers a good model for studying the evolution of sexuality.
