Our commonest hermit crab, especially smaller ones on the shore.

The outside of the shell may carry Calliactis parasitica sea anemone or Hydractinia echinata hydroid. The shell may contain Neanthes (Nereis) fucata polychaete, or Trypetesa lampas, a barnacle that burrows into the columella of the body whorl. Rhizocephalan parasites include Clistosaccus paguri and Peltogaster curvatus.

This is the only species with non-hairy claws and two lines of tubercles running down the fixed part of the claw. A right-handed species.
