Review (by Malcolm Storey)

A beautifully produced looose-leaf photographic atlas of this large and difficult genus. Each species is illustrated with a beautiful photograph of a collection of specimens tastefully arranged on a neutral (wooden) background. A few leaves or other habitat indicators are included. Beneath the photograph is a description of the fruitbodies, microscopy, and habitat, with line drawings of a few spores.

The use of stained wood as a background works well as it has similar tone to the subject matter.

An ongoing project, published in parts. Each part consists of 60 colour plates and an appendix. The appendix which covers nomenclatural matters, corrections and additions, taxonomic sequence and index of species already published.

Part one includes introductory material and a key to sections.

Available in several languages including English.

The total work is projected to contain 300-400 photographic plates in 3 or 4 ring binders.

The present work follows the Nordic tradition of a broad species concept, compared, for instance, to the competing French work.
