Identification of Ectobius spp is based on the microscopic structure of the glandular hollow on the male abdomen (under the wings). This cannot be seen on the living animal, and on freshly killed animals the hollow is filled with fluid. It is best seen after the specimen has dried slightly, but before the abdomen has shrivelled too much.
